Why is New York also called the Big Apple ?


This term was first used in the 1920s by a sports writer to refer to the biggest horse race in the USA, called the Big Apple, which took place in New York. It was then used in a song and was adapted by the music to refer to New York.

This famous city inspired and influenced many singers, that is why there are so many songs about New York.

The rapper Jay Z wrote a song celebrating New York named "Empire State Of Mind" in 2010, and Franck Sinatra sang "New York, New York" in 1979 ...
