Culture of New York City

Because of its size, variety and because of all the different communities that live in it, New York is a city where culture has a huge importance. For example the Harlem Renaissance established the African American  renaissance in the United States. Also, the American modern dance was devloped in NYC in the beginning of the 20th Century. The city was one of the first to welcome the jazz in the 40s and the expressionism movement in the 50s. In this city also appeared the hip hop and the punk rock.

NYC is one of the most important center for film, theaters, dance, visual art, and of course music. New York is also a major center of the Global Art Market.

NYC is the home of many theatres. The 39 largest theatres are known as Broadway and most of them are situated in Times Square. Some Broadways shows like Cats are famous and well known by people all over the world. In NYC there are also smaller theatre known as Off Brodway and Off Off Broadway. The terms used for the theatres depends on the size of the theatre.

At the beginning of the 20th century, New York became a major center for the American music industry. NYC is the center formany different musical genres.
New York acquired the status of center for European classic music in the beginnin of the 19th century.
In New York, the disco music, which is a mix between the funk, the soul, and jazz, emerged in the 1960s.
In the 1970s, it was the punk rock that emerged in New York's fowntown music scene with singers such as New York Dolls, Ramones, Patti Smith.
Hip hop emerged from the Bronx at the beginning of the 1970s. For many years, New York's was the one and only city with a major hip hop scene. In fact, all the major hip hop recording came from NYC. Hip Hop emerged with artists like The Nototious B.I.G, Nas, Jay Z, P.Diddy and bands like Run-D.M.C. The particularity of this kind of music is that it is sang by black people most of the time. Except for Eminem, who is considered as tone of the best Hip Hop/Rap artist of all time, and who is white.

The Metropolitan Opera
New York is one of the only city which has a lot of buildings dedicated to the arts. Such as, The Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, Carnegie Hall, The Linclon Center for the Performing Arts.

The fact that its city's subway system is used by 8 million people everyday, New York city welcomes a lot of new artists. more than 100 musicians from Africa, South America ...

The prestigious Museum of Modern Art

The interesting thing about New York, is that you can find a lot of museums that are about different kind or art. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest and most important art museums around the world. The Museum of Modern Art, also know as (MoMA) is also an important art center in NYC. It is considered by most of people as the the main rival of the Metropolitan Museum.

The Brooklyn musem is the second largest art museum of New York. It is one of the first art instituation created in NYC.
The Jewish Museum of New York was created in 1904. El Museo del Bario is a museum founded in 1969 by artists from Puerto Rico.
In 2006, was created the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, also knows as The Guggenheim, is the most famous museum in NYC. It is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. In this museum, we can find impressionist, post-impressionist and early modern contemporary art. The building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and is one of the 20th century architectural landmarks.
